scallion cream cheese recipe
- Total Time: 165 minutes
- Yield: 10 servings 1x
- Diet: General
Description
This easy homemade scallion cream cheese is a quick, savory spread perfect for busy mornings or snacks, featuring fresh scallions mixed with creamy cheese and a nutty, slightly spicy sesame-togarashi crunch.
Ingredients
- 8 oz full-fat cream cheese, softened
- 4–5 medium scallions (100 g), finely sliced, some green tops reserved for garnish
- 0.25 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 0.125 teaspoon ground white pepper
- 1 tablespoon toasted white sesame seeds
- 1 teaspoon toasted black sesame seeds
- 0.5 teaspoon shichimi togarashi, or to taste
Instructions
- Soften Cream Cheese: Ensure 8 oz block cream cheese is fully softened at room temperature for 30-60 minutes until pliable.
- Prepare Scallions: Finely slice the white and light green parts of the scallions, reserving a small portion of the bright green tops for garnish.
- Combine Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, sliced scallions, 0.25 teaspoon fine sea salt, and 0.125 teaspoon ground white pepper. Mix with a rubber spatula or hand mixer on low speed for 2-3 minutes until smooth and creamy.
- Toast Sesame and Togarashi: In a small dry skillet over medium-low heat, gently toast 1 tablespoon white and 1 teaspoon black sesame seeds for 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Transfer to a small bowl to cool completely, then stir in 0.5 teaspoon shichimi togarashi.
- Chill to Firm: Transfer the prepared scallion cream cheese to an airtight container. Cover tightly and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow flavors to meld and the cream cheese to firm up.
- Serve and Garnish: Remove cream cheese from the refrigerator 10-15 minutes before serving for easy spreading. Transfer to a bowl, create a swirl on the surface, then generously sprinkle the toasted sesame-togarashi mixture over the center and scatter reserved scallion tops around the edges.
Notes
If the cream cheese is too runny, chill for 3-4 hours. For a smoother texture, ensure cream cheese is fully softened before mixing. To adjust saltiness, mix in a tablespoon or two of plain softened cream cheese. For a lighter option, use whipped or low-fat cream cheese, or add a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice for a zesty flavor. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5-7 days.
