in and out sauce recipe

  • Author: Amanda Miller
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 1 cup (8 servings) 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

This recipe for a zesty chipotle In-N-Out style sauce combines classic tangy sweetness with a smoky chipotle kick. It’s quick to prepare and makes a great all-purpose dipping sauce for burgers and fries.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup vegetable-based mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup tomato ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 to 2 medium chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, pureed
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lime zest, finely grated

Instructions

  1. Combine Base Ingredients: Add the mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, white vinegar, granulated sugar, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and yellow mustard to a mixing bowl.
  2. Whisk Until Smooth: Whisk thoroughly until all ingredients are fully combined and the mixture is smooth. If the sauce seems too stiff, add a splash of water or milk to reach your preferred consistency.
  3. Infuse with Chipotle-Lime: Stir in the pureed chipotle peppers and fresh lime juice, mixing well to distribute the smoky, zesty flavors.
  4. Fold in Zest: Gently fold in 1/2 teaspoon of the finely grated lime zest, reserving the remaining zest for garnish.
  5. Refrigerate to Melding Flavors: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the sauce for at least 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to deepen and meld.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Spoon the chilled sauce into a serving dish and sprinkle the reserved lime zest over the top before serving.

Notes

For best flavor, refrigerate for at least 30 minutes after mixing. If the sauce is too thick, thin with a splash of water or milk. Avoid freezing the sauce, as the mayonnaise base will separate and change texture significantly.
