bbq weenies recipe

  • Author: Jusmira Rayne
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 68 appetizer servings 1x
  • Diet: Halal

Description

This recipe delivers incredible flavor with easy-to-make gochujang glazed halal beef frankfurters, perfect as a crowd-pleasing party appetizer or a quick weeknight snack. It offers multiple cooking methods to suit your schedule.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500 g Halal-certified Beef Frankfurters
  • 0.25 cup Gochujang (Korean chili paste), (for milder flavor, use less gochujang)
  • 0.25 cup Packed Light Brown Sugar
  • 2 tbsp Soy Sauce, (use tamari for a gluten-free option)
  • 1 tbsp Rice Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Toasted Sesame Oil, plus extra for garnish
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Ginger, grated
  • 0.25 cup Water
  • 1 tsp Toasted White Sesame Seeds, for garnish
  • 2 Scallions, thinly sliced diagonally, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven, Prepare Weenies: Preheat oven to 180 degrees C (350 degrees F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Cut frankfurters into 2.5 cm (1-inch) segments. (Thaw frozen frankfurters completely; cold weenies absorb less glaze.)
  2. Combine Glaze Ingredients: Whisk gochujang, light brown sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, and water in a medium bowl until smooth and vibrant.
  3. Coat Frankfurter Segments: Add frankfurter segments to the gochujang glaze. Toss thoroughly with a spatula to ensure every piece is well coated.
  4. Cook Weenies: Choose your preferred method: (Stovetop Method) Transfer to a heavy-bottomed saucepan and simmer over medium-low heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the glaze thickens and weenies are heated through. (Slow Cooker Method) Pour into your slow cooker, cover, and cook for 2-3 hours on High or 4-6 hours on Low, stirring once or twice. (Oven Method) Spread on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, stirring halfway, until the glaze bubbles and thickens. Broil for an additional 2-3 minutes for caramelization, watching closely to prevent burning.
  5. Serve and Garnish: Transfer glazed frankfurters to a serving bowl. Drizzle with extra toasted sesame oil and garnish with sesame seeds and scallions.

Notes

Thaw frozen frankfurters completely; cold weenies absorb less glaze. Don’t let the glaze scorch; stir frequently. Avoid overcooking frankfurters, which makes them tough. For a lighter version, use reduced-fat frankfurters and a lower-sugar glaze. For a family meal, add diced bell peppers or onions to the sauce, or serve over rice.
