Description
A homemade brown sugar simple syrup infused with aromatic cardamom and bright orange peel, perfect for elevating coffee and other beverages with a complex, warm depth of flavor.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1 cup filtered water
- 8 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 2 strips orange peel (fresh or dried), pith removed
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: In a small saucepan, combine the light brown sugar, filtered water, lightly crushed green cardamom pods, and orange peel strips. Ensure all ingredients are combined before turning on the heat.
- Dissolve Sugar and Simmer: Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir constantly for 3-5 minutes until the brown sugar has completely dissolved and the mixture turns translucent. Bring to a gentle simmer, reduce heat to low, and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes, without stirring, allowing the flavors to infuse and the syrup to thicken slightly.
- Cool Completely and Strain: Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the syrup cool completely in the pan. Once cool, strain the brown sugar simple syrup through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean, airtight glass bottle or jar to remove the solids.
- Store Syrup: Store the finished syrup in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks.
Notes
Crushing the cardamom pods releases maximum aroma. Avoid using ground cardamom, which can make the syrup cloudy and gritty. Simmer gently to avoid crystallization. Use filtered water for the cleanest taste.
