Description

This recipe provides an easy method for homemade buffalo chicken wings, perfect for a family-friendly meal or game day gathering, resulting in crispy chicken with a tangy, spicy sauce in under an hour. It’s a healthy, high-protein option that can be baked or air-fried.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 kg chicken wingettes and drumettes, patted very dry
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.75 cup original red hot sauce
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 0.5 teaspoon smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. Prep The Wings: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and add an oven-safe wire rack. In a large bowl, toss the patted dry chicken wings with olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt until evenly coated. Arrange wings in a single layer on the wire rack, ensuring they do not touch.
  2. Choose Your Cooking Method: Select between oven baking or air frying for perfectly crispy wings.
  3. Oven Bake Wings: Bake seasoned wings for 40-45 minutes at 400°F (200°C), flipping halfway, until golden brown and crispy (internal temperature should reach 165°F (74°C)). Broil for 2-3 minutes at the end if extra crispiness is desired.
  4. Air Fry Wings: Place seasoned wings in a single layer in your air fryer basket, ensuring it is not overcrowded. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, shaking the basket every 5-7 minutes, until golden and crispy.
  5. Make The Classic Buffalo Sauce: While the wings cook, combine red hot sauce, unsalted butter, white vinegar, and smoked paprika in a small saucepan. Heat over medium-low, stirring until butter is melted and sauce is smooth and slightly simmering. Remove from heat.
  6. Toss And Serve: Transfer cooked wings to a large, clean bowl. Pour the warm buffalo sauce over the hot wings and toss gently until thoroughly coated. Arrange on a platter and serve immediately.

Notes

For crispier wings, ensure they are patted very dry before seasoning. If baking, broil for 2-3 minutes at the end for extra crispiness. For a milder sauce, add a teaspoon of honey or brown sugar. Dairy-free butter or olive oil can be substituted for unsalted butter.
