caramel recipe with condensed milk
- Total Time: 50 minutes
- Yield: 1.5 cups (about 12 servings) 1x
- Diet: General (can be made dairy-free)
Description
This recipe creates a luscious, golden caramel sauce using condensed milk, butter, and brown sugar. It’s a simple, versatile, and comforting treat perfect for various family-friendly desserts.
Ingredients
- 1 can (14 oz / 397g) Sweetened Condensed Milk (full-fat for best results, or a plant-based option)
- 6 tablespoons (85g) Butter (unsalted recommended)
- 0.5 cup (100g) Brown Sugar, packed
- 0.25 teaspoon (1.25g) Fine Sea Salt
- 1 teaspoon (5mL) Vanilla Extract (alcohol-free for a purer taste)
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: In a medium, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk, 6 tablespoons of butter, and 0.5 cup of brown sugar.
- Melt and Stir: Place the saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir constantly for about 3-5 minutes, until the butter is completely melted and the brown sugar has fully dissolved, creating a smooth, cohesive mixture.
- Simmer to Perfection: Increase the heat slightly to medium. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, continuing to cook and stir frequently and vigorously for 5-7 minutes until it visibly thickens and turns a rich golden caramel color.
- Remove and Finish: Immediately take the saucepan off the heat. Stir in the 0.25 teaspoon of fine sea salt and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
- Cool and Enjoy: Carefully pour the hot caramel into a clean, heat-proof jar or bowl. Let it cool at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before serving, as it will thicken considerably.
Notes
For a dairy-free option, use plant-based butter and sweetened condensed milk. If using salted butter, reduce the added fine sea salt by half. A wide, shallow saucepan can reduce cooking time. Constant stirring is essential to prevent scorching and a grainy texture.
