Description

Our easy corn tortilla chips recipe transforms simple tortillas into a healthier, family-friendly snack. These homemade chips offer a perfect crispy crunch, ideal for dips or as a side for dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 15 cm corn tortillas
  • 30 ml vegetable oil
  • 7 g smoked paprika
  • 3 g chipotle powder
  • 1 g dried oregano
  • 1 g ground cumin
  • 2 g garlic powder
  • 5 g fine sea salt
  • 3 g granulated sugar
  • Zest of 1 medium lime

Instructions

  1. Prepare Tortillas: Stack 12 (15 cm / 6-inch) corn tortillas and cut them into 6 or 8 equal wedges; aim for uniform sizes to ensure even cooking.
  2. Coat with Oil: In a large bowl, toss the tortilla wedges with 30 ml (2 tablespoons) vegetable oil until lightly coated, ensuring a lovely golden finish.
  3. Cook Chips: Choose one of the following methods to cook your chips:
    • Frying Method: Heat 1-2 inches of neutral oil (e.g., vegetable, canola) in a large, heavy skillet or Dutch oven to 350-375F (175-190C). Carefully add a single layer of oiled tortilla wedges, frying for 2-3 minutes, flipping once, until golden brown and firm. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain and repeat for remaining batches.
    • Baking Method: Preheat your oven to 375F (190C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Arrange the oiled tortilla wedges in a single layer on the sheets, ensuring no overlap. Bake for 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden brown and crispy.
    • Air Fryer Method: Preheat your air fryer to 375F (190C). Arrange the oiled tortilla wedges in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring good air circulation. Air fry for 4-6 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until golden and audibly crisp.
  4. Prepare Smoky Chipotle Lime Dust: While the chips are still hot, combine 7 g (1.5 teaspoons) smoked paprika, 3 g (1 teaspoon) chipotle powder, 1 g (0.5 teaspoon) dried oregano, 1 g (0.5 teaspoon) ground cumin, 2 g (0.75 teaspoon) garlic powder, 5 g (1 teaspoon) fine sea salt, 3 g (0.75 teaspoon) granulated sugar, and zest of 1 medium lime in a small bowl; mix thoroughly.
  5. Season and Toss: Immediately sprinkle this seasoning blend over the hot chips and toss gently but quickly to ensure the spice blend adheres well, allowing the flavors to bloom.
  6. Cool and Serve: Allow the seasoned chips to cool completely on the baking sheets or a wire rack before serving. This crucial step ensures maximum crispness and allows the flavors to meld beautifully.

Notes

Consider whole grain tortillas for added fiber, use baking or air frying for oil-free options, and nutritional yeast or no salt for low-sodium alternatives. Cool chips completely for maximum crispness and flavor melding.
