- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 oz sliced cremini mushrooms (or button)
- 1 large bell pepper, chopped (any color or frozen)
- 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour (use gluten-free for dietary needs)
- 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
- 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Brown Beef and Aromatics: Heat 1 Tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef, diced onion, and minced garlic. Cook 5-7 minutes until beef is no longer pink and onion softens. Drain excess fat.
- Sauté Vegetables: Add sliced mushrooms and chopped bell peppers to the skillet. Sauté for 5-8 minutes, stirring, until they are tender-crisp and lightly browned.
- Form Roux: Sprinkle 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour evenly over the beef and vegetables. Stir constantly for 1-2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste and form a golden roux.
- Thicken Gravy: Gradually whisk in 2 cups beef broth until lump-free. Simmer gently for 5-7 minutes, stirring, until the gravy visibly thickens and coats a spoon.
- Season and Finish: Stir in 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce. Season generously with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve the hamburger gravy hot.
Notes
For a lighter version, use lean meat; for creamy, add a splash of milk at the end. Gluten-free flour can be used. Button mushrooms or any color/frozen bell peppers are suitable substitutions.
