Description
A rich, homemade honey BBQ sauce that offers deep flavor in just 20 minutes, serving as an upgrade from store-bought versions. It features a sweet, savory, tangy, and smoky profile, perfect for glazing or dipping.
Ingredients
Scale
- 170 g (6 oz) tomato paste
- 180 ml (0.75 cup) honey
- 120 ml (0.5 cup) apple cider vinegar
- 120 ml (0.5 cup) water
- 30 g (2 tbsp) tamarind paste
- 15 ml (1 tbsp) alcohol-free Worcestershire sauce
- 15 ml (1 tbsp) Dijon mustard
- 5 g (1 tsp) onion powder
- 5 g (1 tsp) garlic powder
- 10 g (2 tsp) smoked paprika
- 2.5 g (0.5 tsp) fine sea salt
- 1 g (0.25 tsp) freshly ground black pepper
- 15 ml (1 tbsp) fresh cilantro or chives, finely chopped, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Combine Base Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, whisk together the tomato paste, honey, apple cider vinegar, water, tamarind paste, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard until smooth.
- Add Seasonings: Incorporate the onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper, whisking thoroughly to ensure no lumps remain.
- Simmer Gently: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Reduce heat to low immediately once small bubbles appear on the surface.
- Thicken the Sauce: Continue cooking on low heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently until the sauce thickens to a rich, glossy, and pourable consistency. Add a tablespoon of water if it becomes too thick during simmering.
- Adjust Seasoning and Consistency: Taste the sauce and adjust salt, pepper, or consistency as needed for your preference.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from heat and allow the sauce to cool slightly before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh cilantro or chives, if desired.
Notes
Stir frequently during simmering to prevent sticking and burning on the bottom of the pan. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools. Cool completely before transferring to an airtight container for storage in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freezer for up to 3 months.
