Description
This colorful smoothie recipe uses a warm spiced berry ribbon layered with a cold, creamy smoothie base to create a beautiful swirl effect. It’s designed to make a healthy breakfast or snack appealing to picky eaters by focusing on visual presentation in a clear glass.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 medium frozen banana
- 1.5 cups frozen mixed berries (for base)
- 0.5 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 0.75 cup dairy or plant-based milk
- 1 tbsp maple syrup (for base)
- 0.5 tsp vanilla extract (for base)
- 1 cup frozen mixed berries (for ribbon)
- 1 tbsp maple syrup (for ribbon)
- 0.5 tsp vanilla extract (for ribbon)
- 0.25 tsp ground cinnamon
- 0.1 tsp ground cardamom
- 2 tbsp water or orange juice (as needed for ribbon)
- 1 oz fresh mixed berries (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Berry Ribbon: Combine 1 cup frozen berries, 1 tablespoon maple syrup, 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract, cinnamon, and cardamom in a small blender. Blend on high until smooth and thick. Adjust consistency with 1 to 2 tablespoons water or orange juice if needed, ensuring it remains thick enough to hold shape. Reserve 2 tablespoons of the ribbon for garnish.
- Blend Smoothie Base: In a high-speed blender, combine the frozen banana, 1.5 cups frozen berries, Greek yogurt, milk, 1 tablespoon maple syrup, and 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract. Blend until completely smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as necessary.
- Assemble and Swirl: Pour about one-third of the smoothie base into a clear glass. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of the berry ribbon over this layer. Repeat with another layer of smoothie base and berry ribbon. Top with the remaining smoothie base. Gently insert a skewer or spoon handle and swirl from bottom to top a few times to create a marbled effect.
- Garnish and Serve: Drizzle the reserved berry ribbon over the top of the smoothie and garnish with fresh mixed berries. Serve immediately while cold and thick.
Notes
Use a ripe banana and whole milk Greek yogurt for the richest flavor and texture. For non-dairy options, substitute plant-based milk and yogurt. The recipe is best consumed immediately, but leftovers can be stored for up to 24 hours (stir well before drinking).
