Soft Hamburger Bun Recipe 1765289570.7862966

soft hamburger bun recipe

  • Author: Elina Mirkle
  • Total Time: 200 minutes
  • Yield: 8 buns 1x
  • Diet: General

Description

This recipe offers incredibly soft, golden hamburger buns with a savory roasted garlic and herb swirl, perfect for elevating family burger nights. It’s simple to make using basic ingredients, delivering unmatched freshness and flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2.25 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 cup warm milk (dairy or plant-based)
  • 8 teaspoons olive oil, divided (or 2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons)
  • 1 head garlic, roasted
  • 0.25 cup finely chopped fresh parsley, divided
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh oregano
  • 0.5 cup grated hard Italian-style cheese (e.g., Pecorino Romano)
  • 0.25 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast and Mix Dry Ingredients: Whisk the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Combine Wet and Dry: Pour in the warm milk (40-45°C or 105-115°F) and 2 tablespoons of the olive oil into the dry ingredients. Mix with a spoon or hands until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. (If the dough feels dry, add 1-2 tablespoons of milk to make it pliable.)
  4. First Rise: Lightly oil a bowl, place the dough inside, turning to coat. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place for 60-90 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Roast Garlic and Prepare Swirl: While the dough rises, roast the head of garlic until soft and sweet. Once cooled, mash the roasted garlic cloves and mix them with the remaining 2 teaspoons of olive oil, fresh parsley, fresh oregano, grated Italian-style cheese, and freshly ground black pepper to create the savory swirl filling.
  6. Shape Buns and Fill: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece oblong, then spread a portion of the garlic-herb-cheese filling evenly over the surface. Roll the dough tightly, coil it into a spiral shape, and gently flatten it into a bun.
  7. Second Rise: Arrange the shaped buns on a baking sheet, ensuring they are spaced apart. Cover them loosely and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until they are visibly puffy.
  8. Bake Buns: Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). Lightly brush the tops of the risen buns with a little olive oil. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
  9. Cool and Serve: Transfer the baked buns to a wire rack to cool completely. This ensures their wonderfully soft texture.

Notes

For best results, ensure your milk is comfortably warm (40-45°C or 105-115°F) for optimal yeast activation, and always use fresh instant yeast. For a dairy-free version, use plant-based warm milk. For a healthier bun, substitute up to half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. Cooling buns completely on a wire rack prevents gumminess.
